Looking for vegetarian dishes in Lake Highlands? Here are some of our faves

A letter from E.B. White, author of Charlotte’s Web recently went public and has been making its way around the Internet.

In it, White explains why he wrote Charlotte’s Web and points out the “peculiar problem” for animal lovers forced to face issues concerning farming, cycle-of-life and livestock (and the livestock’s fate, which inevitably is “murder” at the hands of their benefactors).

My affection for animals is at the root of my almost — with occasional pesceterian exceptions — vegetarianism.

Below, a few gems I’ve found around the neighborhood during my quest for delicious meatless, Wilbur-free dishes:

1. Jakes veggie burger (6606 Skillman 214.349.1422)

On a soft, lightly toasted poppy seed bun, the black-bean-based patty is juicy, dense and hearty. I love adding a slice of jalapeno or two. Don’t eat this thing on your couch—it is messy. I highly recommend a side of fried jalapeno bottle caps with a side of ranch dressing. Have antacid on standby.

2. Country style tofu with garlic at Uncle Wok (8440 Abrams 214.343-6670)‎

I usually get takeout, but Uncle Wok’s also has about six tables inside, so you can dine in if you like. I have tried a ton of tofu and I’ve found good, bad and so-so at many a neighborhood Asian eatery. This dish is the best tofu I’ve found, including that at fancier, more expensive spots. It is firm and slightly crisped on the sides. It is lightly fried in a tad-spicy brown sauce and buried in a heap of fresh veggies including snow peas, cabbage and baby corn. My kid who once hated tofu, could not get enough of this.

3. Highlands Café veggie sandwich, poblano club (9661 Audelia, 214.349.2233)

This place is a Lake Highlands staple known for comfort foods including warm-roast-beef French dip, meatloaf, pot roast, jalapeno mac and cheese … it goes on. But the menu includes some savory vegetarian options—a toasted wheat sandwich spread thick with cream cheese under cucumber, lettuce, tomato, red onion, havarti, guacamole; a poblano on wheat with pimento cheese, roma tomatoes and baby spinach. This is a go-to spot for meatless Monday (or any other day) lunch.

Oh, and this — the banana cake — also is meatless (though we are pretty sure eggs and milk are used).
