pzf_building_sPeak Zone Fitness opened  at 8 a.m. this morning at 10531 E. Northwest Highway.

Peak Zone Fitness is a “new workout concept,” according to the spokesperson for Peak Zone. The story goes that Peak Zone was developed by general manager Donny Day, who was once the No. 1 trainer nationwide at Bally Fitness. While there, he met owners Jan and Randy Robinson. They were both in their early 50s and wanted to get in shape. Day worked with them using a process that determined exactly what they needed to do in their workouts to get the most out of it. The Robinsons decided they wanted to share this concept with other people, so they teamed up with Day to start their first fitness center at 10531 Northwest Highway.

Every membership includes a metabolic test called VO2, which determines your oxygen volume when you inhale and whether you are burning, fat or muscle, with every exhale. With this test, trainers can tell what your “peak zone” is and develop a customized workout. Runners also use VO2 to determine how to train for long-distance running or to run faster. The trainers also work to get your heart rate in the “peak zone” via heart monitors.

Every time a member comes into the club, they have a trainer working with them. They have an at-home program for anybody who can’t make it to the gym that day. There’s an exercise of the day demonstrated every hour. Peak Zone also has fitness classes, and the member chose the schedule for them. Just like with the individual workout sessions, everybody has a trainer. They also have nutritional counseling for their members. (If you’d like a chuckle, the gym comparison sheet on the Peak Zone website is pretty hilarious, particularly the “wander around wondering what to do” section.)

There’s a cap of 500 members, and so far, a wide variety of people have signed up, the spokesperson says, including women in their 70s, new moms, teens preparing to go into military service, runners, people wanting to bulk up, and people in their 40s and 50s who want to get in shape.
