In Justin Bieber-like celebrity style, there were squeals of delight Saturday as Beth Lyons and her husband, Brody, pulled up to the lemonade stand ten neighborhood kids were hosting in her honor. Beth is a Kindergarten teacher at Merriman Park Elementary, and the students wanted to show love and support by raising funds for her mounting medical bills.

On Wednesday, May 15, Beth mentioned to then-principal Laurie Taylor that she was headed to the doctor. She had bruises on her legs that didn’t seem to be healing. By Friday, the active, young newlywed had a stunning diagnosis – leukemia.

After lots of tests, she was confirmed to have acute myelogenous leukemia, and she began chemotherapy almost immediately. The first round went well, and Beth became strong enough to be discharged from the hospital June 18th.

“Just being able to do ‘normal’ things, like go to Walmart and play with the dog, have been great for her,” Brody told me. “She’s doing really well.”

Additional treatment will resume later in the summer.

Meanwhile, Brody said, the lemonade stand was a gleeful boost to her spirits.
