Weekly concerts weren’t part of the original plan for the Highlands Cafe. But when neighborhood resident Kate Mackley pitched the idea to managing partners Kathy Stewart and Anita Siegers (also neighborhood residents), they decided to give it a try. “Of course, it was supposed to be a six-week series, and six months later…” Siegers says. “Boom – it just kept going,” Stewart interjects. “People enjoy having live music in Lake Highlands. It’s unusual.” They chose Thursday because it was the slowest night, and it has since become one of the busiest. Mackley, with connections to the Dallas music scene, does the recruiting and turns out talented vocalists who suit the cozy setting. The concerts start at 8 p.m., late enough for parents to tuck the kids in bed then sneak away for a piece of banana cake and a glass of wine. (The area is dry, but the cafe has a club membership.)
