White Rock Local Market’s monthly summer workshop series kicks off with a “Summer Garden Survival” class on Saturday, May 25, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church of Dallas, 5700 Preston Road.

Instructor Heather Rinaldi of Texas Worm Ranch will show expert green-thumbs and wannabes alike how to keep their vegetable gardens producing with summer-hearty plants, wise watering techniques, tricks for pest and disease control, and tips for soil health. Attendees will also get a hands-on primer on how to plan a fall harvest and be able to take home sweet potato slips, basil transplants and pumpkin seeds.

Proceeds from the series will benefit local market programs including “Love Your Farmer” volunteer days, cooking demonstrations, the hands-on gardening and nutrition program “Sprouting Healthy Kids,” SNAP/Lone Star food stamp program and the White Rock local garden.
