This year’s production of South Pacific, with a cast and crew of 50 students, earned a nomination in the Best Lighting and Best Ensemble categories. Patrick Mahurin was singled out for a Best Actor nomination for his role as Emil de Becque, and Chris Truong was nominated Best Featured Performer after playing Luther Billis.

The selections were announced yesterday, to the delight of the students and their parents.

Students from 49 schools in 10 North Texas counties have been nominated in 15 categories. Winners will be revealed at a red carpet, Tony Award-style ceremony May 7 at the State Fair Music Hall, where nominees will arrive in vintage cars. Best Actor and Best Actress winners will earn a 5-day, all-expenses-paid trip to New York City this summer to study with professionals and compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmys. They’ll also be eligible for $25,000 in college scholarships.

The awards night will feature production numbers by Broadway conductor and arranger Michael Moricz, who handles the musical direction for the national competition at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre. There will also be a medley performance for best actor and actress nominees (including Mahurin) and an opening number with supporting actor and featured performer nominees (including Truong). The finale will include two performers from all nominated schools.

Congratulations, Wildcats, and break a leg!
