Spokeswoman Toni Fink at Big Lots says that this location is under lease negotiations and once an agreement is made Big Lots can start moving forward with additional cosmetic improvements such as new flooring, cleaner aisles, outdoor facelifts, and expanded departments. The current lease expires in October.

Time magazine reports that since the 2008 recession, discount retailers have been thriving. Big Lots has also enjoyed an increase in profits and is in the process of updating their existing stores. The company has a “special projects list” that includes remodeling entire markets, such as the Modesto-Stockton market in California. Unfortunately, the Skillman location is not on the special projects list just yet.

With October being only a few months away and the Tom Thumb across the street closing in June, 2013 is turning out to be a formative year for the retail development at Skillman and Abrams.
