Losing the Mariano’s at Old Town was definitely an event to mourn, but the Tex-Mex restaurant has been resurrected less than two miles from its original spot, and it hasn’t made any changes to its most famous menu item, the frozen margarita. The first frozen margarita machine, which Mariano invented in 1971 after a 7-Eleven Slurpee machine inspired him, is now on display in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. So people who order frozen margaritas at Mariano’s can “drink like they’re a part of history,” says general manager Jeff Lowery. If a little tequila goes a long way for you, try soaking it up with the “whole enchilada” – a 20-inch platter comprised of Tex-Mex favorites. Other specialties include the cilantro snapper and the chicken verde, and brisket tacos will make their menu debut this month.
