Plans are moving forward for a 325 unit apartment complex at Lawther and Northwest Hwy (current site of Duncan’s Liquor). On October 4th the City Plan Commission approved a zoning change request for the property to PD (Planned Development Multi-Family). The final vote on the change is now scheduled to take place at the City Council meeting on November 14. District 9’s council member, Sheffie Kadane, says he is planning to recommend approval of the change.

“I think it’s an excellent project. I can’t think of what else could go there. And it goes along with our transit-oriented development goals in Dallas.” Residents will have direct access to Dart’s White Rock Station, the White Rock Creek bike trail, and of course Northwest Highway. A  traffic study commissioned by Post LLC Investment Group has concluded that nearby residential streets will experience minimal impact.

The project is technically located in District 9 but it is directly adjacent to Lake Highland’s District 10. Our council member Jerry Allen says, “It’s really in my backyard.” Allen recalls the site even before Duncan’s Liquor. “I remember when they sold minnows there, for fishing bait at White Rock Lake.” The LH neighborhood most affected by the project is old Merriman Park, behind the Dart Station. Allen says an overwhelming majority of those residents support the project.

If these favorable comments by the two nearest council members are any indication, it looks like the plan is close to becoming a reality. Review our last blog post in Jul  to see the latest conceptual rendering of the plan.
