Gang fight leaves two injured

Two people went to the hospital Friday night with stab wounds after a fight broke out at the Lake Highlands North rec center. Police say it is gang related.

It all started at a 16th birthday party at the Lake Highlands North recreation center. The police report names three gangs involved — one called Goon Squad and the other North Side Goons, and a third TYN (the youth sect of the NSG gang).

According to police reports: a fight broke out involving three black females from rival gangs. Other partygoers jumped in. Police arrived at the scene a little after 11 p.m. after those involved called 9-1-1 from a nearby home (where one of the witnesses lives), but not before two people were stabbed.

It appears, based on the reports, that one of the victims was 25-year-old black male Keneth Mims — after being treated by paramedics at the scene he drove himself to Presbyterian hospital. The name of the other stabbing victim is not released because of age — this person, who reportedly is affiliated with the TYN gang, was transported to Baylor with a deep back wound.  The report indicates that the underage stabbing victim walked away from the scene to call 9-1-1, so he/she, at least initially, was not too injured to walk, perhaps. Also, no deaths have been reported.

According to the report, the gang unit was notified and is investigating.

But they all had insurance, right?

  • wanting the best for LH

There was trouble brewing in those apartments west of the DART tracks and south of Church on Friday after school.   A huge number of boys and girls were moving in a rather angry mob along Church and into the apartments.  As I watched two patrol cars arrived and the kids scattered thru the apartment complex, regrouped and headed north on Skillman.  I was certainly glad they were not heading into my neighborhood .  I left wondering what we, as a community,  could do to redirect all that energy into something constructive.

  • TXGSH

Does anybody want to guess which “side of the tracks” these kids live?  These are not homeowner’s kids.  This stuff is coming out of the apartments.  LH has a definete image problem.  Is it any wonder a business from the outside does not want to invest here?
Those of us that own homes here know what a great place it can be. But do you ever look at LH from an outsider’s perspective?  If you were a potential developer driving from the new Timbercreek area south, down Skillman into LH, what do you see? First, you drive by the run down liquor stores and cash advance stores, the empty gas stations.  Then, you are face to face with two boarded up, beat up, and now grafiti covered apartment complexes (what is up with those properties anyway?).  You take your smart phone out and google, and now see the headlines for gang activity….lovely.  Would you bring your business here?

At some point, we have to figure out how take back our neighborhood.  Any suggestions?  How about our city councilman?  Where is he?  How come we never here anything from him?

Add the double homicide @ Briarwyck Apartments (Forest/Audelia) on Saturday morning and we aren’t looking too good right now…

  • Concerned!

it’s very sad this is happening to our neighborhood….what’s very alarming is this activity is happening right across from the high school. I know the police are busy with other things, but I see things happening all the time around here and I never see them. Where’s our congreeman Pete Sessions? I went to his Facebook page and all he seems to care about is the job Obama is doing….Hey Sessions! Cleanup your own backyard first!

  • Tired

I hear ya, TXGSH.   We are beginning to wonder what are we doing living here and we have loved it here, but stuff like this is unacceptable.  TEAR DOWN THE APARTMENTS is the answer – get rid of these types and clean up the area.  I have no compassion anymore, I want them gone.

  • Neighbor

Has anyone besides me noticed how many police cars are parked at the police station at all times of the day? Maybe more police on patrol could prevent crime. Or maybe the DPD just has far too many cars

  • Action LH

Definitely noticed an increased police presence this morning at LHJH….made me wonder if I should have dropped my child off there this morning.

  • Wilson!

Pete’s not the Congressman for most of LH and not for the area around the high school.

yes, here’s a link to a TV news story on that http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpp/news/02182012–Children-Inside-Apartment-During-Double-Murder

  • Sick & Tired

Is there any connection with these gangs of kids at LH and Andrew Green’s hit and run?  There have been “rumors” at LHHS for weeks now about some gang involvement and an argument he had with someone in one of the gangs mentioned in this story and some kids are saying the goon squad might have had somehting to do with Andrew being killed

Okay, let’s tear down all the apartments in LH.  How do you propose we do this?  Are you going to buy the land and tear them down?  Or do you expect the owners of the obviously profitable properties to do it of their own accord, sacrificing oodles of cash for the good of the neighborhood?

  • wanting the best for LH

Right, we do not need any more apartments.   Why didn’t our councilman alert us to a zoning request for 300 new apartments on just 4 acres at Northwest Hwy and the DART Station ?

  • Tired

That’s the answer – I have no idea how to get it done but everyone knows the massive amount of bad apartments is the problem around here.  If crime continues in this vein, homeowners will start moving out and LH will not survive it.  Sure, we’d like to stick it out but this is the safety of our kids and that is not worth it.

I have lived in LH for more than 19 years and have worked in a LH school for 14 years.  I love the area and feel very safe.  I do not go out late at night to areas that are known for problems.  I have a house alarm that we use when we are gone, and we park our cars in the garage.  Having grown up in a northern city known for crime, I do not put myself at risk.  Your kids are safer at school than anywhere else — since both my children went through LH schools, I can attest to that.

  • Concerned&Tired

I’ve also heard those rumors and I have daughters that go to LH and love the neighborhood, but we also live in apartments that everyone is talking about and we are not trash or want our complex torn down we are a hard working family who love our kids and want only the best for them. If they did have something to do with Andrew’s death it needs to be looked into!! I am tired of worrying about my kids at school and hoping they make it home safe while Im at work.

  • Disgusted

I have heard of these gang activities and am disgusting by how they seem to be taking over the neighborhoods, where are the police?? Why can 6-7 kids jump someone right outside the school and the cops aren’t there?? I contacted the police and let them know what was going to happen and they said that I had to talk to the school… and unless someone calls 911 there was nothing they could do.  That makes me sick! Just look on Facebook they have kids on there letting you know when and who they are going to jump!! They have kids on facebook threatening to kill and shoot each other, I just don’t understand how the school or police cannot get a handle on this.  The people that were involved in the stabbing were all over facebook letting everyone know that they were going to get the victim!! Where are the parents for these kids? Why do they have no idea their kids are running these streets, posting on facebook threatening people? I wish the Police department would put this on their priority list.. Apartments have nothing to do with this.  Are people who live in apartments less than anyone else? I would hope not because I live in an apartment and work very hard for my family and would not ever consider my kids to be less than anyone else at LH, I hope thats not what we are teaching our kids.

I WISH THESE TRASH PEOPLE WOULD JUST MOVE BACK TO SOUTH DALLAS ,WHERE THEY BELONG

  • Lhwildcat

So apparently another party is planned at the rec center for this weekend….why would the rec center allow another party after last week’s went bad…Let’s hope the police are aware there’s another party and have a strong presence in the area before someone else gets hurt or the violence spills into the neighborhood.

  • Wilson!

Do you really need an answer to that?  (and if you think this just applies to “apartment families” you may be deluded.
