City to consider grant for LH Town Center

A committee today will consider a $13 million HUD grant to help boost the Lake Highlands Town Center.

The City’s Economic Development Committee today will meet regarding the ”Community Development Block Grant Section 108 Guaranteed Loan Application for the Lake Highlands Town Center.”

Robert Wilonsky explains on the Observer’s City Hall blog.

The development committee is expected to ask the City Council to allow a public hearing in January to appeal for $13 Million in HUD Block grants to “jumpstart” the town center, reportedly, by funding a parking garage.

Last summer, a consultant stressed the need for a better parking situation.

  • wanting the best for LH

Does HUD make loans for parking garages ?   Anytime I see HUD mentioned in regards to Lake Highlands it makes me very uneasy.

  • LH since 1981

I would assume the referenced parking structure must primarily support residential development, not retail…..

I have always felt that the first development (and perhaps only development other than a pad site or two)) we’ll see at the LH Town Center would be high-density residential similar to the project immediately south of the Kohl’s store at Medallion Center.

Does anyone know what happened at the meeting?

The meeting was just a briefing, and the housing/community services department is asking council to start the public hearing process for this loan at Wednesday’s council meeting. We discuss the loan on tomorrow morning’s podcast and will have a couple of other posts on the topic coming soon. Thanks for asking!
