If you live in a part of the neighborhood where crime tends to be a problem, that’s good, right? Or will moving more cops to the street detract from other important police work?

Dallas Police Chief David Brown Thursday announced plans to send hundreds of detectives back into uniformed patrol positions for two-week rotations over the next several months.

The chief is getting a lot of flack from cops, it would appear from this Dallas Morning News piece.

Critics say sending detectives into the streets will disrupt ongoing investigations and also note that the detectives, who have been doing a different type of police work, in some cases for many years, won’t be adequately prepared for the streets.

One police officer remarked to the DMN reporter that it’s simply a “dog and pony show” to appease the public.

But Brown told the reporter that the criticism is coming from a small group of naysayers who just hate any type of change. “I call them cops against virtually everything,” he tells the News.
