The Lake Highlands North Recreation Center has re-opened just in time to say “on-time” — predictions had forecast April, and indeed there was a carnival and open house on Saturday, April 30.  The balloons were still up when I visited on Monday, May 2, to pick up a new brochure with schedules and upcoming summer program news.

Much of the renovation (electrical updates, etc.) is invisible to the naked eye, but the new paint and decor is a treat– especially the new bathrooms and updated showers.

Here are some of my favorite things about the Rec Center:  They have an exercise weight room that you can use for $18 per month ($14 for seniors over 60)– an added benefit is the scenic view of the nature area and fountain on the east side of the building from the weight room.  The Rec Center has fun affordable summer camps (They fill up fast!)  Adults can take fitness classes for $2 per class- what a deal!  (Medium to high impact aerobics are M-Th, 9:10 -10:00 a.m., and low impact is M,W,TH at 10:15.)  And I love their open gym times, 5:00 -9:00 pm, because the gym is widely used by neighborhood youth for pickup basketball.

The center is also your best source for clear blue recycle bags, which are FREE to Dallas residents.  There is a membership fee for use of the center ($25 for Dallas residents or $10 for seniors).  Hours are M-Th: 9 am to 9 pm, Fri: 2 pm to 6 pm, Sat: 9 am – 12pm, Sun closed.

The Spray Ground will open May 28th, and the pool will open June 4.
