Lake Highlands High coaches and players can take joy in walking around the city and calling their football stadium The Boneyard after beating stadium roommate Berkner 27-21 Friday night.

It wasn’t always pretty, but it was certainly an eventful evening. Here are a few thoughts:

  • Defensive lineman Tre Stewart was missing for most of the game with an injury, right after we did a video about him. I started thinking “Curse” but then I realized everybody else we have done videos on has been fine, other than Roderick Mackey but a) he was hurt before we did our video and b) he is coming along superbly in his recovery. Stewart was seen after the game holding the LH flag and roaming around the field.
  • Here was an exchange between Stewart and head coach Scott Smith:

Smith: You gonna be able to get up to the locker room?

Stewart: Coach you’re going to have to carry me off the field tonight. I just want to stay here and soak it all up.

Smith: I know what you mean Tre. (HUGE smile) I’ll carry you up that hill if I have to though.

  • Desmond Roland went over 1,000 yards on the season by racking up 260 yards and four touchdowns. He now stands at 1,08 yards and 21 touchdowns this season. Roland pulled up lame near the end of the game, but Smith said “He’s awesome,” when asked the nature of his injury.
  • The onside kick call after the Wildcats scored their first touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 was a huge call. Not only did it shift momentum back to the Cats, it showed near perfect execution from everybody on special teams.
  • DeVonte Sunwenghan averaged 41 yards per catch. What??? He had three catches for 123 yards. But teammates Deondre Glover and Zach Fleig made very fine catches at crucial moments in the game. This offense could really open up if all of the receivers continue to make clutch catches throughout the game.
  • The middle of the field seemed to be a problem for the Wildcats defense as Spencer Edmonds grabbed six passes and a touchdown all in that area. But the Wildcats did hold Aric Stock to under 200 yards passing.
