One LH church is teaming up with a local charity to provide a free, fun and safe Halloween activity for neighborhood kids on Halloween night. Highland Oaks Church of Christ, in partnership with Family Shadetree, will host Trunk or Treat for Thurgood Marshall and Northlake Elementary students Halloween Sunday from 4-5:30 pm.

The church has set a goal of providing “70 trunks and all the candy a kid could ask for,” and they’ll set up in the Thurgood Marshall parking lot to reach the multitude of children living in apartment homes nearby. They’ll also be giving away hot dog meals, and they’ve invited the LHHS cheerleaders and football players to help entertain the kids. LH firefighters and other neighborhood organizations will also be on hand.

Family Shadetree is a non-profit, faith-based, community-driven organization which provides short-term assistance to families who’ve experienced difficulty. They particularly target families with children at risk of dropping out or falling through the educational cracks.

Many of the folks providing goodie trunks will be Northlake or Thurgood Marshall teachers, and prizes will be awarded for the Best Teacher’s Trunk. If you’re interested in helping, Highland Oaks is having a candy drive and will accept your donations at the church, 10805 Walnut Hill.
