Continuing on my mission to eventually visit every Asian eatery in/near Lake Highlands, I ate at La’ Me last week. The cozy but comfortable restaurant looks like it might have been a Starbucks-type coffee shop at one time. They still serve coffee drinks, by the way. Personnel is friendly and prompt, though you won’t encounter many English-speaking staffers, which can make things tough if you’re as new to this as I am. The spring rolls, to start, contained fresh veggies and plump shrimp; Vermicelli bowls are big heaping piles of pasta with shrimp patties, pork, beef or chicken with bean sprouts, cucumbers and carrots. The banh mi sandwich with pork, cucumbers, pickled veggies and a light smearing of chili sauce is close to perfection. The menu also offers eight types of pho. I can’t help but compare La’ Me to Pho 95, right next door, which I adore. Two very similar spots. La’ Me really has the sandwich thing down, but Pho 95 has slightly healthier portions and a more courteous staff, based on my experience. The La’ Me waitstaff as I mentioned, is very sweet and attentive, but the crew left a bad taste in my mouth when they began mopping under my feet at 7:55 p.m. They close at 8 p.m. daily. We were waiting on a dish I ordered to-go for my daughter until approximately 8:05 p.m., and a man (cook?) wearing flip flops kept opening the kitchen door and looking at us. Maybe it was my imagination but I swear his eyes were saying, “get out”! The prices are about the same as Pho 95 — cheap! La’ Me, 9780 Walnut, 972.669.8515. M-F 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
