The senior girls were victorious Sunday in the annual LHHS Powder Puff football tournament, first besting the sophomore team then playing the juniors for the championship on the LHHS B field. You can see my photo slide show here and video of the winning play here.
The seniors, coached by Ricky Zorn and Kurt Stadelmann, rotated positions to let all 30 girls have some field time. Quarterbacks DJ Sandidge and Nena Rubin led the girls to a 20-6 win over the sophomores in the first game, with Caroline Henton and Michal Ann Starr making repeated first downs.
Sophomore QB Ann Jaggars showed confidence throwing the ball, with strong play by Mary-Margaret Johnson, Julia Dankberg and Matalee Reed.
The juniors defeated the freshmen 33-0, benefitting from having played the game as a team in previous years. Jeff Claybrook, Mitch Marzuola and Braden Fair coached the 11th graders, with Jessica Ritter serving as quarterback. Avery Voigt was effective on both sides of the ball, scoring a touchdown for the team and making a tough tackle (though the Bell Boys announcing from the press box reminded her over the PA it was only flag football). Jessi Youman had an impressive running game and Hollyn Adams ran for a touchdown in a red sequined headband, to the chagrin of senior James Duke officiating, who protested at the non-regulation gear.
Coaches Mitchell Henton and Creighton Chapman led the freshman girls, with especially strong play by volleyballer Jamie Crawford and clothing designer Katie Ritenour. Look for next year’s sophomore team to come on strong.
Senior DJ Sandidge passed to Carmen Burroughs for the only touchdown in the championship game, for a final score of 6-0. The girls may sport a few bumps and bruises at school today, but their memories will last a lifetime. Go Girl Cats!
