Monday’s first day of the Class 5A Region II track meet was mostly preliminaries, but LH athletes did turn in some impressive performances.

James Bearden took third place in the high jump with a top height of 6-6. That gave LH its only points on either the men’s or women’s side on the first day.

In the 3,200 meters, LH junior Meron Fessahaie was 10th in 9:31.46 while teammate Nathan Hogg finished 18th in 10:09.83. Zack Knickman was 11th in the shot put with a throw of 49-3.

On the girls’ side, Kosi Ekwu had a throw of 33-9 in the shot put but did not place.

In qualifying, Ronnie Jordan had the second-fastest time in the 300 hurdles with 37.93. Jordan also clocked the fifth-best time in the 110 hurdles in 14.33.

Curry Young turned in the fourth-best time in the girls’ 200 meters in 24.68. She also had the fifth-best time in the 100 in 12.07.

Day 2 of the event began this morning with some field event finals, including LH’s Isaac Grieder in the pole vault. Track finals begin at 5:30 p.m. at Baylor’s Hart-Patterson Track Stadium.
