Terry Berrier, choir and music teacher at LHHS, was surprised with flowers and balloons in her classroom this week to announce her selection as a STAR Teacher of the Year. The STAR designation – Superior Teaching Achievements in RISD – goes to ten teachers annually and comes with a check for $1,000. Mrs. Berrier was the only high school teacher in RISD to win the honor.

RISD’s Excellence in Education Foundation administered the selection and recognition of the winners, and a grant by M & A Technology made the award checks possible. Mrs. Berrier and the other winners will be honored at the Excellence in Education Foundation Banquet April 23, the REA/Board of Trustees Banquet May 20, the Superintendent’s Convocation in August, and RISD Night at the Ranger Game May 18.

The following teachers also earned STAR status: Mandy Braddy of Parkhill JH, Lyndsey Dickinson of Audelia Creek, Karen Fields of Spring Creek, Becky Lesher of Moss Haven, Camille Parker of West JH, Tara Parmley of Thurgood Marshall, Anne Shacklett of Prestonwood, Jarred Stewart of North JH, and Scott Tiffany of Northlake Elementary.

Mrs. Berrier is on a winning streak. She recently took her students to the AP Music Theory College Bowl in Carrollton, and they won the competition for the second time. In 2008 she was awarded the Sponsor Excellence Award by the University Interscholastic League. “I’m thrilled that Mrs. Berrier is getting the recognition she so deserves for all she does for our kids and the LHHS choir community,” said choir mom Diana Milan.
