Back when White Rock Lake was a little more utilitarian than it is today, Ben and Helen Hundley were the people who helped make it that way. As the operators of Hundley Boat Concessions on the west side of the lake for 41 years, the Hundleys rented all manner of items to lake patrons — fishing boats, paddle boats, bait, bird feed and the hot dogs Helen Hundley cooked up herself. Their run ended in 1994, when Ben Hundley contracted cancer; he died four days after they closed up shop. The DMN obituary details lots of other information about the Hundley family, and there’s a nice picture of Helen Hundley looking out over the lake from her concession stand.
