The arrest of former LH football player Dionte Garrett and another Texas A&M-Commerce teammate on drug charges has turned a simple, college-town news story into a national controversy, thanks to the remarks of football coach Guy Morriss.

Nearly 2,000 copies of the school newspaper reporting the arrest were stolen from campus news racks. When interviewed by police, Morriss admitted it was his players who stole the newspapers, some of whom were caught on video stealing from the police department.

Morriss also told police, "I’m proud of my players for doing that. This was the best team-building exercise we’ve ever done."

Thanks to Morriss’ statements, the story has spread like wildfire, even prompting an editorial in The Huffington Post. Talk about a play backfiring on you.
