The Wildcat varsity and JV play in tournaments this weekend, with both teams hoping to gain some credibility by facing tough opponents.

The varsity team will play in the RISD Ice Bowl, drawing home field advantage in all three games. The Cats play Rockwall Thursday at 6:20 pm, Flower Mound Marcus Friday at 7:30 pm, and Colleyville Heritage at noon on Saturday. Games will be shorter, just 25 minutes halves, and playoff games are scheduled, though predicted rain could force changes. A dream finish for the guys would be LHHS vs. Richardson in the Saturday night championship, particularly since former LHHS assistant Ryan Logan now coaches the Eagles. But we have to get out of bracket play first.

“We should have our hands full,” LH head coach Hanes Brindley told me. “We saw Marcus last week,” (that’s the nationally top ranked team we played last week to a 1-0 loss). “They beat Colleyville Heritage 3-2 Tuesday night, so we know Heritage can score.” Both teams will be tough. “I don’t think we have played our best soccer yet,” Coach Brindley said. “I would like to see us possess the ball more and win more 50/50 balls. If we can play a bit more physically, I think we could be pretty tough to beat.”

Meanwhile, the JV plays in the Garland Invitational Tournament, facing Plano East at Rowlett High Thursday at 1:45 pm. They’ll face Coppell at 1:15 at Sachse High on Friday and McKinney Boyd at Naaman Forest later that day. The fields in this tournament are grass and more likely to be called off if it rains.
