Lake Highlands High School senior Jason Baldwin is leading an effort to collect items for Haiti relief kits. I met Jason, president of the Young Republicans, and his buddy Luke Wickberg, a member of the Young Democrats, last Sunday while helping to put the kits together at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church.

We assembled about 300 kits (which didn’t take long with the many volunteers) before running out of supplies. The folks at LHUMC assembled nearly 200 kits last Wednesday night, too. They had no shortage of manpower, but needed more of the hygiene products that go in the kits being shipped to Haiti, Luke’s mom Sandy Wickberg told me.

So, Jason rallied his fellow students and with the help of other young republicans, democrats and libertarians organized the drive. This isn’t the first time the students have crossed party lines to do good —they joined forces to collect about 116 Toys for Tots last holiday season, Jason says. After the jump is a list of supplies needed for each kit, which go in a 1 gallon Zip Lock bag. If you want to donate, you can bring items or a check to the school.
