Ricky Zorn’s heroics aren’t limited to the football field. With the Lake Highlands boys basketball team missing two starters Monday to injury and illness, Zorn came up big with 28 points in an 84-65 win over Rowlett in the opener of the Plano Wildcat Holiday Classic.

LH will face Mesquite in the second round Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. in the Plano Senior High gym. The Cats lost to Mesquite, 65-63, back on Nov. 24. If LH wins the Cats will play again at 8:15 p.m. If the Wildcats lose they will play again at 5 p.m.

Zorn’s scoring outburst was partially a result of him switching positions. Zorn, normally the LH point guard, took over at shooting guard because Trey Bingham was out with a stomach virus.

LH coach Rob Wylie said it’s been a tall task for Zorn to transition from quarterback to the responsibilities of point guard, but moving to the wing gave him more freedom to score. James Preston, who scored 13, played the point against Rowlett.

"He [Zorn] played pretty well today," Wylie said. "He was making some 3’s and took the ball to the basket."

Wylie also praised the effort of James Lonergan who came up with crucial rebounds.

The Cats were also missing Aaron Mazibuko, who is out indefinitely with a hairline fracture of the fibula (lower leg). Demarcus Bernard was also suffering from a stomach virus but managed to score six points.

"He [Bernard] could only play a couple of minutes at a time," Wylie said. "We were just trying to piece something together where we could get a W."
