Restaurant Talk: Society Bakery to open near Lake Highlands

Yesterday afternoon, as I was slipping into a vegetative state from a life-sapping week of multiple-magazine production, forums, parent conferences and high school football games when, like manna from heaven, a box of cupcakes from Society Bakery landed at my desk. (I know, I know … I apologize to my coworkers who missed out — the things disappeared almost instantaneously, I swear.)

The occasion? The launch of the new Grandma’s Favorite Cupcake Collection (“a nod to grandma, who believed you needed nothing more than a good heart, good spirit, and good recipes to be a success,” according to the press release accompanying the goods).

The most irresistible of the selection, at a glance, was the Banana Pudding Cupcake (real sliced bananas in cake with a pudding filling and crushed Nilla Wafers on top). Gooey, flaky and topped with rich buttery, sugary cream cheese icing, it was a magical combo of texture and delightfully familiar flavors. With a nibble, my troubles momentarily melted away. Other flavors in the line include Red Velvet, Carrot Cake, Apple Pie (also insanely wonderful with apple filling in the cake and caramel in the icing), Peanut Butter, and Pecan Praline. These cupcakes, I’ve determined, are my new comfort food.

I also learned during yesterday’s divine Society Bakery interruption, that  (following some stiff competition with other businesses for the spot) the company plans to open a second location at Medical City Dallas Hospital in January 2010. Founder Roshi Muns says Society will open a third and fourth location in the near future, as well. Society Bakery is located at 3426 Greenville Avenue, 214.827.1411, or info@societybakery.com. The new Grandma’s Favorite flavors will be available as a set of six for $17.70 or individually, ranging from $2.95 to $3.25 a piece.
