While the rest of the world was traveling from Austin to Dallas for the Cotton Bowl, I was gliding easily down the empty side of I-35 from Lake Highlands to Georgetown to watch my son play soccer for Southwestern University in Georgetown. The mighty Pirates lost the game, but I discovered my new favorite stop along the way – Collin Street Bakery in Waco. Long-famous for their fruitcakes and their historic location in downtown Corsicana, the new store features walls of glass cases displaying delicious desserts, including cheesecakes, cookies, pies, and many other sinful treats. (I am now addicted to the fudge pecan pie and the sand tart cookies.) They also serve sandwiches made on their fresh-baked breads, homemade soups and gourmet coffee to help you perk up for your drive. Take exit 338A at Bellmead on the edge of Waco – you may never make it home.
