The reporter who covers the running scene for the Dallas Morning News wrote a piece last Friday about new parking restrictions at White Rock Lake (thanks to Back Talk reader Ted Barker for bringing it to my attention). The new rules were apparently met with quite a shock during the May 2 White Rock n’ Roll Dallas Running Club event (held the same day as the White Rock Lake Festival, which tells me runners were not the only ones affected).
The ordinance prevents parking on roadside grass, which is where a good chunk of White Rock Lake event participants traditionally park. Some members of the running community reportedly think officials should have left things as they were, calling the solution “a lot worse than the problem”, but councilman Sheffie Kadane says, “you can’t go to every park and park all over the grass.”
Personally, I can see the validity of both arguments, but this is sure to be a contentious issue and I have made some calls and plan to write more on this and how it might possibly influence happenings at White Rock Lake, either here on Back Talk or in an upcoming print version of Advocate. Stay tuned.
