This week Sam Douglas, Lake Highlands High grad of 2005, was awarded the most elite recognition given by Southern Methodist University – The “M” Award. Only ten students receive the honor each year at a ceremony held on campus. Sam knew something was up since he received the event invitation, but he was surprised when his name was called for the top award and when his parents, Robert and Debbie, emerged to congratulate him.

At LHHS, Sam was Student Council president and Bell Boy, among many other activities and honors. At SMU he received a full scholarship via the Hunt Leadership Scholars Program and he served as Student Foundation President. Though his mother was very proud, it wasn’t until she missed the Young Life fundraising banquet – an event she would never skip otherwise – that friends pressed her and learned the news. Personally, I love to tell a good Sam story. Like the time he emceed the Forest Meadow talent show, and who could forget the LH Senior Show when he hopped up on the piano wearing only boxer shorts and we all held our breath fearing there might be more to the show than we were ready for. Good times, good times…
