Every three months, LH resident Chris Barnes spearheads an effort by Lake Highlands United Methodist Church to provide a meal for folks at Austin Street Centre. This Sunday, volunteers are preparing to serve food for about 500 people, but Spring Break has got their regular contributors scattered. They are appealing to the community to jump in and to reap the feel-good rewards of this outreach program.

Help is needed to prepare food and to serve it. Chefs may deliver pre-made sandwiches, hard boiled eggs, or fruit to the church kitchen, 9015 Plano Road this Saturday, March 21 anytime from 9am to noon. Servers meet at the church at 4:30 am Sunday to caravan to the homeless shelter and provide service with a smile. The group will be back to the church by 6:30 am, in time to get back to their home church or regular Sunday activities.

Volunteers should email Chris to get instructions – the food is packaged in a certain way to make it easily transported by recipients. He’ll be relieved to add you to his list. And if you’d like to offer your own church, club, company, or other organization to bring a meal on another day, visit the Austin Street website – their homeless clients will need help the other 364 days of the year.
