These students know how to feel good and go strong no matter what their age — it’s an ancient Chinese secret. Pupils of Tai Chi at The Point, Center for Arts and Education at the C.C. Young retirement community near White Rock Lake, gain strength and stability, stimulate brain function and boost overall health, say administrators. “It has been shown to improve balance and well-being. And the main idea behind all the activities at The Point is to nurture creativity,” says Sharon Bogard, the center’s director of development. In addition to the Tai Chi classes led by Dr. Sifu Tran of Chan Qi Fa martial arts, The Point offers computer and general continuing education classes, plus arts and theater programs. Bogard says they might even add ballroom dancing to the curriculum sometime in the near future. Like Tai Chi, she explains, ballroom dance has been proven to enhance coordination in participants (not to mention the reality-TV series possibilities). All activities at The Point are open not only to C.C. Young residents, but also the senior community at large.

Tai Chi classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Additional one-hour sessions are available on Saturday, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. by appointment. To schedule an appointment, call Felecia Burns at 214.841.2831.
