This weekend:

READING AND WRANGLERS. Supporting the Lake Highlands High School Wranglers is as easy as this — according to a fan who asked me to remind you of the dance troupe’s fundraising efforts — “SHOP, SHOP, SHOP!”  Buy stuff — books, CDs, DVDs, children toys, games and stuff animals, Godiva chocolate, Christmas cards, Vera Bradley accessories, globes, Starbuck coffee, bookmarks, calendars, photo albums, sandwiches, soups, to name a few (whew) — and a percentage goes to the Wranglers Washington D.C. trip fund. Teacher and membership discounts apply, too. If you didn’t get a voucher just mention the Wranglers at checkout.

ALSO: The Wranglers perform at NorthPark tomorrow (Friday) at 5 p.m. on the lower level by the AMC.

THE ROCK. I just got an e-mail from reader Mike Stovall requesting that I make one final call for volunteers at the White Rock Marathon. Our neighbor Janet Smith, he writes, “is recruiting and coordinating volunteers to serve as course monitors … the job is pretty simple but very rewarding … "it’s the one job where you can tell folks where to go and they thank you for it," she says … monitors are stationed at turns and make sure that the runners stay on course. Janet likes to say that this is "one job where you can tell someone where to go and they appreciate it… serve only a few hours or all day. Time slots are available from 5:45 a.m. to around 2:00 p.m. or so. Volunteers will get thousands of "thank yous" from the runners along with an official WR Marathon Volunteer t-shirt. Visit whiterocklake.org to sign up.
