It is almost 8 p.m., and yoga students at the neighborhood gym are rolling up their mats and bidding farewell to their instructor as she shuts off the tranquil tunes.

Enter the teacher of the post-yoga class: With an unruly shock of graying hair, baggy shorts and a bursting-at-the-seams bag of paraphernalia, it’s obvious from a glance that Logan Daffron isn’t your typical fitness trainer. His area of exercise expertise lies in juggling. Before you emit a giggle or jump to judgment, understand that Daffron’s skills and teachings have been so sought after that the Dallas Cowboys football team once employed him.

“It was back in the late ’80s, when they were trying sort-of unconventional training methods … to improve hand-eye coordination, agility and movement,” Draffon says.

“Some of the guys got to where they could juggle three footballs.”

One linebacker thanked Draffon, saying the juggling lessons helped him catch a game-altering pass. But Draffon doesn’t take himself or his trade too seriously. In fact, before he was forthcoming about his work with ’s Team, he joked that “juggling is really good for nothin’ — it’s just a lot of fun.”

His students seem to enjoy it. Ten-year-old Bradley Barteau, for example, juggles three plastic bowling pins effortlessly.

“I’ve been doing it a few months,” he says. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Draffon’s free juggling class meets Tuesdays at 8 p.m. in the first-floor studio at White Rock Athletic Club in Old Lake Highlands. Non-members are welcome at his (and only his) class.
