Now that Mayor Tom Leppert has been in office for a year, the DMN spent a page of its Sunday edition analyzing what Leppert and the council have accomplished. The answer is: A lot. Whether you like the guy and his goals or not, it’s fair to say he has made the difference on a number of important issues, including the Trinity tollroad, the downtown taxpayer-owned convention center hotel, the disposition of Reunion Arena, the elimination of the verified-response alarm program and the addition of police officers (budget-wise, anyway), among others. He also has been fairly visible in southern Dallas, where our prior mayor rarely traveled and only with a helmet when she did. The story has some obligatory speculation about Leppert’s suitability for higher office, which he is wisely noncommital about. And there are storm clouds brewing about the city’s budget shortfalls and how that issue will be handled, since Leppert is adamant about not increasing city taxes. But despite thinking he’s going the wrong direction on the big issues, I have to take my hat off to the guy: He hit the ground running, he pushed through his campaign agenda, and he seems to have no shortage of energy to keep moving.
