I know that the L Streets neighborhood association last weekend held a "demolition party" for the old Northwest Terrace complex leveling, which I sadly wasn’t able to attend, but it wasn’t until this morning that I saw a portion of the land sans the defunct apartments. It’s one thing to talk about change, but it’s exciting to see it in the works. The space, once it is cleaned up will become a senior living community.

(Brief background: The new 13-acre development will serve seniors and “emphasize an active lifestyle and amenities to create better quality and longevity of life,” according to a formal presentation by developers Churchill Residential. Plans call for a four-story building with up to 180 apartment-style homes ranging from 650 to 1,025 square feet. Construction is scheduled to begin in June and end in September and the new center should open about a year from now.)

I’ve been looking at that Northwest Terrace building ever since it was a nice, pretty and functional apartment complex. I’ve also lived next to the Shoreview/ Fernadale shopping center for many years, and driven (or been driven as a child) by the many apartments lining Skillman. These days, all the aforementioned — the whole landscape of Lake Highlands in fact — is changing dramatically — and well, I guess we all have our own ways of dealing with that.
