Sometimes I meet a student at Lake Highlands High so outstanding she blows my hair back.

I’ve written about Caroline Horres before. She’s the Wrangler who walked to school to enourage students to carpool and save the environment. She’s at it again.

Caroline is concerned about the plight of refugees in Darfur who are suffering in refugee camps after fleeing rape and racial cleansing by the Janjaweed. She joined a local group called "Defend Darfur Dallas", which is partnering with the Dallas Holocaust Museum, SMU, and other groups to host "Art for Darfur" Saturday, April 12 at SMU’s Taubman Atrium in the Meadow School of Arts. A silent auction will raise money for the International Rescue Committee‘s efforts to provide clean drinking water and medical supplies in refugee camps in Darfur, Sudan, and Chad. Caroline wants you to participate.

"Above all," Caroline said, "we are seeking awareness." They are hosting "Tents of Hope" in which organizations and individuals paint tents to simulate the refugee camps. Tents will be painted and displayed beginning at 6 pm on April 12, and the silent auction will begin at 7 pm. Participants can help by donating art supplies, painting a tent, contributing auction items, making a purchase, and/or attending the event. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults, and attire is dressy casual.

"These tents signify hope to people who feel helpless," said Caroline. "It is amazing what individuals can do when we work together."
