The open sign is on today at Coach’s Burgers, Vanessa and Michael Stevens’ new restaurant at Forest and Abrams. We mentioned their enterprise in our September magazine, in a story about Michael’s father, Al Stevens, who spent two decades running the Moss Park soccer fields concession stand.

The restaurant is dedicated to the unsung heroes in our neighborhood and beyond, including Al Stevens. When they were in the initial planning stages, they intended to devote a full section to Coach Al with old photographs of him and all of the teams he coached. Michael also planned to write to everyone from Division 1 coaches across the nation and professional leagues in Dallas to Lake Highlands High School coaches, asking for words of wisdom and photos to hang on the walls. I’m anxious to see what they came up with.

Vanessa is in charge of the food, and based on the muffins, bonbons, baklava and other treats of hers I have tasted in the past, it should be good. The official grand opening will be in a couple of weeks. We’ll keep you posted on the details.

In the meantime, support one of our own Lake Highlands families and go grab a burger at Coach’s.
