Lake Highlands High School’s associate choir director, Ms. Terry Berrier, has been named as a recipient of the Sponsor Excellence Award by the University Interscholastic League (UIL).  Ms. Berrier was surprised at the LHHS Holiday Concert when Choral Music Director Michael O’Hern and Principal Dr. Bob Iden announced the honor. The UIL presentation (including a monetary award and trophy) will occur in the spring.

Ms. Berrier has been teaching music for 25 years, including 8 at LHHS. In addition to her teaching duties at LHHS, she teaches an Advanced Placement Music Theory course, which recently won an incentive grant through AP Strategies, Inc. and the O’Donnell Foundation. (AP courses offer college-level curriculum to high school students and allow students to "place out" of college courses, receiving credit for the material and saving tuition money on the course.)

My personal observations of Ms. Berrier affirm that she has the patience of Job, balancing students who think choir is a no-work "blow off" class, kids with limited talent but a love for music, and prima-donnas (and their stage mothers) who are certain they were born to play the lead in every musical production. She brings out the best in the kids, and she helps them see the potential they were blessed with. Congratulations to Ms. Berrier, seen below with Michael O’Hern and Dr. Bob Iden.
