Yesterday’s pep rally at Lake Highlands High School was as loud and raucous as usual, but this time it was the moms being cheered. In a long-standing Wildcat tradition, the senior football moms did a dance and the senior cheerleader moms did a cheer. Okay, Britney Spears they are not, but it was pretty cute. Both teams used a little hip-hop music to get the crowd of students going, and the football moms even recruited senior Wrangler mom Jill Mackie Rommel to choreograph. They wore jeans and their sons’ jerseys, and the cheer moms pirated their daughters sweatshirts and pom-poms.

Some of the moms were great dancers and some not-so-much, but that isn’t the point. It felt like Small Town USA in that gym, where everyone knows and supports everyone else. The tearjerking moment was when the football players stood up from their seats on the gym floor, walked over to their moms, and gave them a big hug. Better than a townsfolk barn-raising or a parade through the town square.
