If the combination of shellfish and Shriners makes you smile, then you’ll want to join the White Rock Lake Foundation this month for its third annual fundraising shindig, the White Rock ’n Boil Festival.

The event, held at Flagpole Hill, will feature food, including a crawfish boil, drinks, music provided by the Shriners’ Directors Staff band, a gaming area for kids, and vendor and artist booths.

Admittance to the all-day event will be free, and entrance to the children’s games area will cost $5. One highlight of the day is likely to be the Shriners’ band, which will play sometime after dusk. With nine members between the ages of 35 to 70-something, the band plays rock ‘n roll, blues, country and more on a mobile stage wired for lights and sound.

Chris Moore, a band member and Foundation volunteer, says the festival’s organizers are working on booking one or two more bands to play during the day.

The event is being touted as “fun for the whole family” by its organizers. Susan Falvo, president of the White Rock Lake Foundation, says that events like this one have helped fund so many improvements at White Rock Lake over the last decade.

“The difference between 10 years ago and today is like night and day,” she says. “A lot of things have been done, but we’ve got a long way to go, too.”

The foundation plans to use the proceeds from the festival toward a few of its most pressing projects, including completing the stone signage at Winfrey Point.

The group also works closely with the Dallas Parks’ Department.

“They have a wish list they give us, and we pick from that and put in the monies that we have according to their top priorities,” Falvo says.

Other short-term projects the Foundation is working on include:

• A lighting design plan developed with the City of Dallas;

• Re-stocking of the bass population and re-building of fishing piers at White Rock Lake;

• Installation of “Lock, Take and Hide” signs to help prevent theft.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Falvo says of the days’ events. “Everybody will find something there that they’re going to enjoy.”
