4th Celebration. Gaston Oaks Baptist Church invites all to come and celebrate the 4th of July with grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, chips and a drink, for a nominal fee. Games will begin at 6:30 p.m. and diner is at 7 p.m. Gaston Oaks is located at Greenville Ave. and Royal Lane — they boast this location is the best place to watch the fireworks displayed by the Royal Oaks country club. Free watermelon and music will also be available.

 

 

 

Theatre Showcase. Nine Dallas theatre companies will gather at the Bath House Cultural Center at 521East Lawther Dr., July 7 through 29. They will present a festival of diverse productions during the Second Annual Festival of Independent Theatres. Plays will be performed in rotating repertory Thursdays through Sundays. Each block includes productions from two or three theatres. Admission is $30 per pass to all nine productions or $10 per block. Friday and Saturday night shows are $12. Cool Thursdays. It’s back to the scenic Arboretum for another summer of casual musical evenings through Aug. 31, 7:30 p.m., on the Camp Concert Lawn overlooking White Rock Lake. The venue features a variety of music ranging from light jazz, classical, swing and country — just bring your blanket and picnic basket. For information and a list of performers, call 214-327-8263. EDUCATION

 

 

 

Talented recognized.  More than 21,100 American seventh graders in 16 states have been recognized by the Duke University Talent Identification Program this year for high scores on the SAT or ACT.  The area students include Eric Johnson and Kyle Johnson, Lake Highlands Junior High School; Amy Wilson, home schooled; and Rachel Yeates, Providence Christian School.

 

 

 

Off-to-College Reports.  Lake Highlands High School graduate Ntalya Kaliazine has won the Grace Collins and Will Collins Scholarship in business and economics at Austin College.  Fellow LH graduate Kenny Drake received the Robert Bradshaw Memorial Scholarship. 

 

 

Outstanding Youth Recognized. The Exchange Club of Lake Highlands January Youths of The Month were Leslie Stiles and Brian Malouf. February Youths of the Month were Becky Bristow and Reid Callaway. March Youths of the Month were Anne Marie Zoffuto and John Herrington. April Youths of The Month was Mariel Pacey and Jeff Morton. The Exchange Club presents these awards each month to two students selected by LHHS teachers. All selections will then be eligible for Youth of The Year Awards.

 

MEETINGS

 

 

 

The Lake Highlands/White Rock Democrats. The monthly meeting of the Lake Highlands/White Rock Democrats will be on Saturday, July 8, at 9 a.m. The meeting will be at Dancemaster’s Studio at 10675 E. Northwest Highway, Ste. 2600B. A continental breakfast will be served. JUST FOR KIDS

 

 

 

Books and Songs. The Skillman Southwestern Branch, 5707 Skillman, will be offering a variety of activities throughout July. On July 5, 2:30 p.m., there is a puppetry workshop. The next Library Live! program will be held on July 8, 2:30 p.m. and on July 12, 2:30 p.m., kids can learn how to make their own noisemakers. Louie the Lightning Bug will teach little ones about electricity on July 19, 2:30 p.m. On Tuesdays at10 a.m., Toddler Time will feature stories, songs and rhymes for ages 18 to 36 months. At 10:40 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., similar activities for preschoolers are planned. On July 10, 7 p.m., ages two and older can wear their pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed animal to Pajama Story Fun. For information, call 214-670-6078.

 

 

 

Join Happy the Clown for a puppet show at the Audelia Branch Library, 10045 Audelia Road, on July 6, 2:30 p.m., and July 8, 10:30 a.m. The show will include stories, a film and a circus craft.
