White Rock Lake Bird Watching Tours meet each Saturday morning at Casa Linda shopping Center in front of Chili’s at 8 a.m. sharp. From there the group will go to various places of birding interest around the lake for two to three hours. For information, call 214-823-9521.

 

 

 

Everyone Loves a Parade. The annual Lake Highlands 4th of July Parade and Carnival will be held on Tuesday, July 4, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Gather for judging first at the North Highlands Bible Church, Garden Oaks & Church; competition is for best decorated bikes, trikes, floats, costumes and pets. The parade will end at the Lake Highlands North Rec Center with awards, entertainment, food, games and prizes. At 10:30 a.m., the pool opens for free swimming. The event is sponsored by the Lake Highlands Exchange Club, REMAX Associates of Dallas and the Dallas Park and Recreation Department. For information, call 670-7794.

 

 

 

ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

 

 

Uncle Calvin’s Coffeehouse. The June entertainment line-up is Kate Campbell and Zoe Speaks on June 16; Steve Kritzer and Bob Cheever on June 23; and Susan Shore and Andy Ridinger on June 30. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the shows begin at 8 p.m. Uncle Calvin’s is a smoke and alcohol free environment serving coffees, teas, juices and desserts; location is 9555 N. Summer Reading. Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Richardson Square Mall will host story time in the Juniors Department on Saturday, June 3, at noon, with WBAP News Director Dan Potter. To celebrate Father’s Day weekend on Saturday, June 17, former Texas Ranger Baseball catcher, Jim Sundberg will be signing and speaking about his new book “How to Win at Sports Parenting” at noon. That same day, meet author Jennifer Kaski who will discuss her new book “The Book of Landry,” at 2 p.m. Wrapping up the month on Wednesday, June 21, at 7 p.m., Laura Werlin will do a sampling of her new book, “The New American Cheese.”

 

 

 

EDUCATION

 

 

Teacher Recognized. Katha Black, physical education teacher at Lake Highlands High School, will receive the Phoebe Apperson Hearst “Educator of the Year” award at the National Convention of PTAs, June 24-26 in Chicago. Black was selected from hundreds of candidates because of her many accomplishments, including the establishment of the Wildcat Wranglers, a country-western dance group that has won national recognition.

 

 

 

Young Masters. Mariana Andreeva and Carter Martin, students at Lake Highlands High School, participated in the Advanced Placement Arts Incentive Program Young Master Exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art.

 

 

 

Oscar Quality. Five Northlake Elementary School students from Mrs. Cox’s English as a Second language class honed their thespian skills with the “The Three Little Pigs.” The wolf is played by Charles Freeman, who has just fallen into the pot of soup while (l to r) Amy Clement, Luna Nazghi, Stefanie Zim and Zuly Luma look on.

 

 

 

Poster Kids. Lake Highlands Elementary School students from Marilyn Lokken’s third grade won prizes for designing posters for Wal-Mart’s Poison Control/Anti-Drug Campaign. (L to r) Wal-Mart employee David Johnson congratulates First Place winner Whitney Cochran who won a 10-speed mountain bike and helmet. Third Place went to Isa Hasler who won a Sony Walkman and Second Place went to Jordan Heller winning a Game Boy. Lokken was (rear) was on hand to share the honor.

 

 

 

Drill Team Officers. The Lake Highlands High School Highlandettes Drill Team Officers for the 2000-2001 school year are: Lt. Lindsey Holt, Lt. Karen Balaze, Captain Sarah Hopkins, First Lt. Lauren Rooker, Lt. Jessica Smith and Lt. Lindsay Hargrove.

 

 

 

Young Heroes. The Exchange Club of Lake Highlands presented its quarterly Unsung Hero Award in March to three Lake Highlands High School Seniors. Club members Janet Beard (far left) and Jack Cleaveland (far right) congratulate Chip Hodges, John Herrington and Robert Walne. These three teenagers were recognized for their efforts in collecting over 1,200 toys this past Christmas, which were contributed to the Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Center (EXCAP), The Ronald McDonald House and Toys For Tots. The students were amazed to find that 50 percent of the homes contacted gave an average of four toys a bag.

 

 

 

SENIORS

 

 

 

Burton to Speak. Ridgewood Park AARP Chapter 3787 will meet at 10 a.m. at the Ridgewood Park United Methodist Church, located at 6445 East Lovers, on Thursday, June 22. The program will be provided by Alex Burton, reporter of Senior News Service. AARP meetings are every fourth Thursday of each month. Lunch is not served during June, July and August.

 

 

 

The Greater Lakewood Shepherd Center will celebrate its 15th anniversary on June 16 with a luncheon at the First Community Church, 6255 East Mockingbird Lane. Entertainment includes pianist Maxine Shaw and Dixieland jazz band The Survivors. Lunch is catered by The Upper Crust and keynote speaker Rev. Williams Jennings Bryan III will talk about the history of Bryan Street. Tickets are $20; for information, call 214-823-2583.

 

 

 

JUST FOR KIDS

 

 

Kids at the Audelia Road Branch Library have a full line-up of summer events. Beginning on June 1, the Summer Reading Club hosts children’s entertainers Sandy Shrout and Friends presenting the “Pecos Bill” puppet show at 2:30 p.m. On June 8, Logan the Juggler tackles objects of all kinds.  June 15, Boopsie the Clown’s show features magic around an Olympic theme.  June 22 Sandy Shrout returns with a “ Little Red Riding Hood.”  On June 27, Professor Pflugehorn presents “Our Magical Environment.”  Library Live! is Saturday, June 17, at 10:30 a.m.: “Dance of the Spirit with Ava Howard. Saturday, June 10, at 10:30 a.m. is Family Story Time Puppet Show; The “Mysterious Egg” is a dinosaur puppet show with a dinosaur craft, stories and a film. And each week the library offers Toddler Tale Time featuring stories, films and crafts for ages 18 to 35 months, on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.

 

 

 

Book Worms. Author and Illustrator Patricia Polacco will once again grace the Enchanted Forest Book Store, 6333 E. Mockingbird, with her presence on Thursday, June 8, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Join Polacco for a magical presentation followed by a signing of her many works, including her newest title, The Butterfly. IN THE NEWS

 

 

New Wheels. NEON (Northeast Organized Neighbors) and For-The-Love-Of-The-Lake have donated five additional police bikes to the Northeast Operations Bicycle Squad. The new police bikes have boosted the Northeast bike squad to 12 officers. The donations give the squad the versatility to achieve maximum coverage, dawn to dusk.
