Lake Highlands Under the Stars. The Exchange Club of Lake Highlands and the Lake Highlands High School Jazz Ensemble are once again hosting this popular spring event. On May 14, bring your family, a picnic dinner, blankets and lawn chairs to the park area behind the Audelia Library, 10045 Audelia (at Church Road). Uncle Calvin’s Coffee House. EDUCATION
Glen Oaks Day School, 12105 Plano Road, was recently granted re-accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This program recognition has been achieved by approximately 7% of the early childhood programs nationwide- some 6,943 programs serving 635,190 children. NAEYC’s accreditation began in 1985, with the first program accredited in 1986. Glen Oaks was one of the first programs in the Metroplex to achieve accreditation and has been accredited since 1988.
The A-Team. Seventy-one Freshman Center students made the “A-Team” by finishing the first semester with an “A” average in all their classes. Cheerleading Champs. The Lake Highlands High School Varsity Cheerleaders attended the American Cheerleader Association National Championship Competition in San Antonio recently. The Lake Highlands Squad was selected as a finalist in the Senior Varsity Division, finishing fifth out of 17 squads. Ashley Forney, Natalie Ross, and Haley Heard were finalists in the Best Cheerleader Individual Competition. Senior Highlandettes’ Last Revue. White Rock Rotary and LHHS Wranglers. The White Rock Rotary Celebrates its 18th Chili Gala. The City of Dallas and the White Rock Rotary Club hosted their annual mid-winter chili-fest for the physically and mentally handicapped at the Bachman Recreation Center. This annual community service project took place on Saturday, January 29, with the White Rock Rotary providing the chili and all the trimmings and the entertainment was provided by the Lake Highlands Wranglers from Lake Highlands High School.
First Place. The Forest Meadow Junior High eighth grade cheerleaders recently won first place in the Junior High Division at the Dallas Maverick NCA Cheerleader Competition and performed during half time of a Dallas Mavericks basketball game.

Saddle Up. Spur Award winner and author of Little Red Cowboy Hat Susan Lowell will ride in to talk about her newest book, Cindy Ellen, on May 11 at Enchanted Forest Books for Children, 6333 E. Books and Songs. The Skillman Southwestern Branch, 5707 Skillman, will be offering a variety of activities throughout May including an exhibit — Brides Forever: Modern Dolls. The Mayor’s Summer Reading Club will kick off on May 27, 2:30 p.m.; come and sign up and, and pick up your door prize and summer packet. Miss Jo will be performing. On May 31, 2:30 p.m., a member of the Dallas Classical Guitar Society will show kids different kinds of guitars and how to play in a variety of musical styles. On Tuesdays at10 a.m., Toddler Time will feature stories, songs and rhymes for ages 18 to 36 months. At 10:40 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., similar activities for preschoolers are planned. Beakman’s World. Where can you search for aliens, name your own bug and burp as loud as you can in the name of science? The Science Place’s newest exhibit, Beakman’s World on Tour from May 20-September 10. This is an “anything goes” exhibit that explores how the world works by combining asked questions, the wonder of science and a large dose of humor. Experience the mysteries of the rainforest, the human body, prehistoric dinosaurs and outer space; each section is equipped with interactive computer stations. Adventures In Learning. The Greater Lakewood Shepherd’s Center’s Summer Semester of Adventures in Learning for senior adults will begin in June. The stimulating classes, activities, and programs include square dancing, book reviews, language classes, and many more. Participants bring a sack lunch as beverage and dessert are provided.
