Staff members at Legal Service of North Texas can’t remember when Lois Bacon wasn’t volunteering for their agency. This neighborhood resident served on the board of directors from 1979-83 and began volunteering in the office part-time after her professional retirement in 1983.

Since the late 1980s, Lois has been a full-time volunteer, working eight hours a day, five days a week – and only three weeks of vacation per year. Staff members call her an “irreplaceable angel” who handles the administrative tasks of the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program.

The goal of the program is to provide high quality legal services to low-income individuals through staff and volunteer attorneys. It is a joint pro bono program of Legal Services of North Texas and the Dallas Bar Association.

Lois matches clients with attorneys, updates the database, answers attorney and client questions over the telephone and helps wherever she is needed.

“Lois is one of the most reliable, loyal, dedicated and humble volunteers we have ever had the honor to know,” says Bonnie Marsteller, director of the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program.

In honor of her many years of service, Lois recently was recognized as the 1999 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in the lifetime service category.
