It’s not mom’s, but it’s close.

Chicken-fried steak, baked meat-loaf, steak-n-eggs – it’s all served up at Chubby’s Family Restaurant at Northwest Highway and Jupiter. Home-cooking is the mainstay, but the menu also includes Tex-Mex and Greek food.

Chubby’s is a full-service restaurant (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and boasts a loyal following for all three meals.

In the morning, starting at 6 a.m., you can choose a real Texan’s breakfast – old fashioned Steak-n-Eggs ($5.95), pancakes ($1.95-$3.65) or Chubby’s economical breakfast specials ($2.95), which include the usual plate of bacon, sausage, eggs, and your choice of pancakes or French toast.

Adding a little spice are the Tex-Mex dishes, including tasty Huevos Rancheros. Any breakfast item is available all day, but if you want one of the specials, you’ll have to add 80 cents after 11 a.m. and on weekends.

For lunch, try Chubby’s chicken. You can order it in a Greek dish, in a Tex-Mex platter, or on its own, but don’t miss it – the marinated and seared flavor delivers the goods. Probably the best chicken dish is the Mesquite Roasted Chicken ($4.95).

Chubby’s sandwich menu covers more ground than most delis, and it’s cheaper: Burgers, gyros, chicken breast sandwiches, grilled cheese and pitas are all under $4. Salads are just as varied and about as inexpensive.

I recommend the Tex-Mex and Greek dishes. Steak Ranchera ($6.55) is only for the hearty eaters, but the Acapulco chicken is light and tangy.

Chubby’s doesn’t list desserts on the menu, but it’s not for lack thereof. To chose your pie ($1.55) or cake ($1.95), you’ll need to saunter over to the dessert case. Or you can save yourself the effort – and after all that food, it will be one – and take my word for it: The cheesecakes, the German chocolate cake and the strawberry shortcake are dangerously delicious and inexpensive.

Chubby’s just doubled its square footage by adding a large, enclosed no-smoking area, as clean and comfortably decorated as the original dining room. Chubby’s opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m.; the restaurant also offers a seniors menu.

Chubby’s is located at 11333 E. Northwest Highway (348-6065).
