Three public forums have been set to meet candidates for the RISD Board of Trustees.
The first forum is set April 7 at 7 p.m. at Lake Highlands Junior High, 10301 Kingsley. It will be hosted by the PTAs from Forest Meadow and Lake Highlands Junior Highs and Lake Highlands High School.
On April 12 at 7 p.m., a second forum will be held at Pearce High School, 1600 Coit. The PTAs from Pearce and Brentfield Elementary will sponsor the forum.
The final forum will be April 19 at 7 p.m. at the RISD Administration Building, 400 Greenville. It is sponsored by the RISD Council of PTAs and the Richardson League of Women Voters. This forum will be broadcast live on Telecable of Richardson and will be repeated several times before the election, which is scheduled May 7. Videotapes will also be available in local libraries.
Also, look for the Advocate’s election coverage in our May issue. Each school board candidate will be offered the opportunity to provide brief answers to several questions posed by the Advocate; results will be published along with a photograph of the candidate. Call us at 341-3353 for details.
Exchange Club Honors Youths of the Month
Kenda Armstrong, Michael McCurdy, Leigh Jenkins and Richard Cobb, seniors at Lake Highlands High School, recently were honored as Youths of the Month by the Lake Highlands Exchange Club.
Armstrong’s grade point average is 99.4 and she ranks fourth in her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Club, Girl’s Service League and Students Against Drunk Driving. She was given the “Outstanding Character and Intellectual Promise” award by the Yale Club and Lake Highlands faculty. She plans to attend Texas A&M University and study industrial engineering.
McCurdy is a member of the National Honor Society and ranks 27th in his class with a 95.3 grade point average. He is a member of the varsity tennis team, the Math Club and was treasurer of his junior class. He is an Eagle Scout and National Merit Commended Student. He will attend Notre Dame after studying a year in Argentina.
Jenkins is captain of the varsity swim team and has lettered every year in the sport. She also is a three-year member of the yearbook staff and is involved in the Girl’s Service League. She is a member of the National Honor Society and will study journalism at Indiana University this fall.
Cobb is ranked second in his class with a grade point average of 102. He is the concert master of the school orchestra, president of the Computer Club and a member of the National Honor Society and Math Club. He has been accepted to Rice University and plans to study computer engineering.

MUSICAL TALENTS: Three Northlake Elementary School sixth graders recently were honored at the UIL Band Contest at Berkner High School. Derek Hendrix received a 1, honors, (the highest score possible) for his trumpet solo. Joseph Fowler and Matt Janick received a 1, superior rank, for their bell ensemble.
DONATIONS SOUGHT: Lake Highlands Elementary is seeking donations for its All School Garage sale April 30 at the school, 9501 Ferndale. The fund-raiser will help purchase new playground equipment. For information, call the school at 503-2460.
GIFTED STUDENT: Lake Highlands resident Christopher Mabry has been selected to attend the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas. The program is an early college admissions program that provides gifted students with a chance to complete two years of college while earning a high school diploma. Mabry, the son of Mariana and J.L. Mabry, is expected to be ready for his junior year of college when he graduates from the academy in 1996.
