On Christmas Day ’75 grad Judy Mart Stewart was basking in 100 degrees with her husband and three children. No, they weren’t on Christmas holiday – Judy and her family live below the equator in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
Judy attended Moody Bible College in Chicago and majored in foreign ministries. When her degree was completed, she moved back to Dallas and worked in the reservation office for Delta Airlines.
A chance meeting with Glen Stewart changed her life. It turned out that Glen had grown up in Mexico City in a family of missionaries. He had also gone to Moody College but as an aviation student in Kentucky. With so much in common, it didn’t take long for their romance to take off. They were married within a year.
In the summer of 1986 they were sent to Bolivia with the South American Mission. Glen initially worked as a mechanic for the aircraft but is now working in the administration division. Judy works in their home and teaches Bible studies. She also tracks the aircraft coming and going for the Mission via hand radio.
Frances Mart, Judy’s mom, told me she talks with Judy about once a week over the radio so she feels that Judy and the kids are close by in the neighborhood. The Stewarts usually come home for an extended vacation every three years.
True Red and White
Andrew Nichols ’81 is in the neighborhood and has set up his general law practice in the area. He specializes wills and trusts, domestic relations, bankruptcy and child custody.
Nichols attended Austin College and the University of Nebraska Law School. He says he has always stayed true to the school colors of red and white. It’s in his blood.
Single and active, Nichols plays basketball, cycles and sings in the Plano Civic Chorus.
All the way From San Francisco
We heard ’84 grad Merton Hanks was in town for the big play-off game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys in the Texas Stadium a couple of weeks ago. But Hanks wasn’t in the stands cheering for a Cowboys victory – he was on the field in a 49ers uniform trying to prevent a Cowboys victory!
Silver Celebration
On Jan. 28, there was a lot of singing and dancing going on at Royal Oaks Country Club to celebrate the 25 years of service the Lake Highlands Women’s League has devoted to their community.
Members performed skits about the history of the Women’s League which spotlighted some mothers and daughters who are both members of the League. Sustaining member Mary Frances-Russell and her daughter, who is a current member, Sally Russell Grinsfelder ’70 joined another mother/daughter duo, Lola Sanford and Beverly Sanford Marr ’74, in representing the second generation club.
Reportedly, the skits, conceived and directed by long-time L.H. resident Helen Coulter, were hilarious and deserved the standing ovation they received.
Women’s League has contributed roughly $152,000 towards college scholarships to Lake Highlands students and another $48,000 to the community. Congratulations to the League and hats off to your continued dedication.
Recent Graduates Carry on LH Pride
David Brummel ’92 has had an outstanding year as a member of Earlham College Men’s Cross Country Team according to coach Pat Thomas.
“David was among the top five every meet and has demonstrated the potential to develop into an outstanding collegiate runner,” Thomas says.
Another sports related item, Seamus Lonergan ’93 was selected rookie of the week recently because of his excellent back to back basketball games he has played for Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Lonergan leads Dartmouth in the steal category. His coach, Dave Faucher expects Sea to be a big part of the success in Dartmouth’s basketball future.
