More than 1,500 students from around the world will be spending the upcoming school year in the United States as part of the Academic Year in the USA International program. Families are needed to serve as hosts for these students.
“The responsibility of the host family is to provide room and board for the student, in addition to caring support,” says Katina Politz, the exchange group’s local representative.
“Although the exchange student starts out as a guest, they quickly become a family member.”
The students, who range in age from 15 to 18, have been selected based on maturity, flexibility, scholastics, citizenship and a willingness to participate in the life of an American family. They represent 25 different countries, including Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, and they come to the United States with some English skills and their own spending money.
The host families and students attend a series of orientations before, during and after the exchange year to ensure the experience is positive. A local exchange program counselor is available to assist the host family and student with any issues that may arise during the student’s stay.

WRE Sponsors Enrollment Night for New Students
White Rock Elementary School will hold Enrollment Night for new students at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 for everyone entering White Rock for the 1993-94 school year.
Following a brief school orientation, new parents and students will have an opportunity to speak to the principal, counselor, staff members and PTA parents. A video about the school will be shown, and student supply packets for each grade level will be available for purchase.
On enrollment night, parents may complete paperwork necessary for registration.
Enrollment forms are available at the school office. For those unable to attend Enrollment Night, registration can be arranged through the school office beginning Aug. 9.
